US Raw Steel production up 4% to 1,932,000 net tons

NEW YORK (Scrap Register): United States domestic raw steel production advanced by 4% year-on-year to 1,932,000 net tons in the week ended August 23 while the capability utilization rate was 80.3 percent, as per the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

According to AISI, production was 1,858,000 net tons in the week ending August 23, 2013, while the capability utilization then was 77.6 percent.

Production for the week ending August 23, 2014 is up 0.7 percent from the previous week ending August 16, 2014 when production was 1,919,000 net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 79.8 percent.

Adjusted year-to-date production through August 23, 2014 was 62,195 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 77.1 percent. That is up 0.6 percent from the 61,817 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 76.9 percent.

Broken down by districts, here's production for the week ending August 23, 2014 in thousands of net tons: North East: 238; Great Lakes: 691; Midwest: 237; Southern: 676 and Western: 90 for a total of 1,932.
